Pilling in Bloom

2004 Finalists

Pilling, Lancashire

The village of Pilling has been described by local historian as ‘an independent entity cut off from the rest of England for more than 2000 years by the sea and the bog’, ‘Rich in dialect and folklore, a bird sanctuary and a happy hunting ground for the botanist and lover of nature’.

Since the marshes were drained in the mid 19th century, Pilling has been an important area for agriculture and horticulture, tourism is playing an increasingly significant role in village life.

Pilling in Bloom aims to enhance the appearance of the village for the benefit of both residents and visitors. Our displays reflect Pilling’s heritage, incorporating floral displays on restored farm machinery and railway memorabilia. We are also seeking to sustain the natural environment by encouraging wild flowers and permanent planting schemes favourable to wildlife.
